George W. Kahler Sr.
George W. Kahler Sr., 69, of Rome and Old Forge, NY passed away unexpectedly Tuesday evening, January 24, 2012 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Utica. He was born August 14, 1942 in Rome, NY the son of the late Gerald and Helen Podczebca Kahler.
He was a 1961 graduate of Rome Free Academy. On May 23, 1964 he married Gail J. Herzog in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Verona. George found success in business throughout his life as a partner in Midstate Supply Corporation retiring in 1991 and has maintained a role in George Kahler Sales — the company he founded in 1979 and co-owned with his son, Jeff. George was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, New London Volunteer Fire Department, New London Fire District Board of Commissioners and was treasurer for 30 years, Greenway-Verona Mills Fish and Game Club and director of Boonville Oneida County Fair. He had a lifelong love of Hot Rods and enjoyed Corvettes and Harleys greatly over the past several years.
George’s family meant the world to him and his strength, integrity, and love will be greatly missed and never forgotten. George was always a committed and devoted husband and during the past several years his strength of will and love shone in his commitment to caring for his wife of 47 years as she struggled with Alzheimer’s.
George is survived by his wife, Gail; two sons, George Jr. and his wife, Beth, and Jeff and his wife, Patty; five grandchildren, Jacob, Kierstyn, Matthew, Mark, and Spencer, who were without a doubt his pride and joy; and his dog, Koko. George found great comfort in a few close friendships that he maintained over the years and those friends know who they are.
The family wishes to express appreciation to the staff at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Old Forge Police and EMT staff for their excellent care and sensitivity as they stood with us during this difficult time. Dad would also want to express his sincerest gratitude for the compassion and loyalty of those who provided care and assistance to Gail over the past years.
