Seamanship course starts Wednesday in Whitesboro High

MARCY — Utica Power and Sail Squadron will offer its "Seamanship" course Wednesday nights from January through April at Whitesboro High School on Route 291.

The course will be held each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25; Feb. 8, 15 and 29; March 14, 21 and 28; and April 11. Cost is $110 or $45 for members, which includes text book and study materials. Students who pass the course receive a U.S. Power Squadrons Seamanship Course completion certificate.

To register, call David Schulz at 266-0511.

Seamanship builds on the basics taught in the squadron’s public boating course, America’s Boating Course. Seamanship is the recommended first course for both power boaters and sailors. Students learn practical marlinespike, navigation rules, hull design and performance, responsibilities of the skipper, boat care, operating a boat under normal and abnormal conditions, what to do in various emergencies and weather conditions, nautical customs and common courtesy in the water. The course provides a needed introduction to the USPS Educational Program and a strong foundation for students going on to other advanced grades courses or Cruise Planning or Sail. Seamanship is designed for everyone from beginners to experienced boaters.

Students will receive instruction from several experienced squadron instructors, including Linda LaDuc and David Schulz.
