DEC offering summer camp applications

The state Department of Environmental Conservation will be accepting applications for its 2012 Summer Camp Program beginning on Jan. 28.

The summer camp program offers week-long adventures in conservation education for children ages 11-17. DEC operates four residential camps for youth ages 11-13: Camp Colby in Saranac Lake, Franklin County; Camp DeBruce in Livingston Manor, Sullivan County; Camp Rushford in Caneadea, Allegany County and Pack Forest in Warrensburg, Warren County.

Pack Forest and Camp Rushford also feature Teenage Ecology Week, an environmental studies program for campers ages 14-17.

Campers will learn about environmental stewardship through hands-on experience in the outdoors. They will participate in a wide variety of activities including fishing, bird watching, fly-tying, archery, canoeing, hiking, camping, orienteering and hunter safety education. DEC counselors will also teach youth conservation techniques used by natural resource professionals, such as measuring trees and estimating wildlife populations.

All four camps will run for seven weeks, beginning July 1. Youngsters who have attended camp in the past may register for any of the weeks within their age range and can attend for more than one week. The cost for camp is $350 a week and must be included with the application. Campers may not stay at camp on Saturday night, so alternate arrangements need to be made if two consecutive weeks are selected.

Information and applications are available on the DEC’s web site at or by calling 518-402-8014.
