Tips lead to marijuana raid on River Street
Five men and one woman were charged with marijuana possession Wednesday afternoon following a drug raid at their River Street residence.
The raid was based on anonymous tips from the public, law enforcers said.
The identities of the six people were not immediately available this morning, other than Andrew T. Mitchell, 44, who police said was taken into custody on a City Court warrant for failing to pay a surcharge on a previous case. Mitchell was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana for Wednesday’s raid at 107 River St., along with the five others, police said.
Those five were each issued appearance tickets to City Court at a later date, police said.
The owner of the property 107 River St. is Magdi Younan, of Rome, according to city tax records.
According to Detective Commander Timothy J. Bates, the police Special Response Team raided the duplex shortly after 5 p.m. All six individuals were inside, and Bates said they seized a half-ounce of marijuana and drug-packaging materials.
Bates said tips and anonymous e-mails from citizens had alerted police to the drug activity. River Street runs north and south off of East Dominick Street, behind the Central Fire Station.
Anyone who wants to report drug activity in their own neighbors can send anonymous e-mails from the website www.romepd.com.
