Plug to dead friend’s utility account brings over $4,000 in fraud charges

WHITESBORO — A 47-year-old man is accused of racking up a more than $4,000 National Grid bill while living in a mobile home owned by a dead friend.

Police said Jody E. Carney was living at the Junction Trailer Park on Oriskany Boulevard after an acquaintance passed away on Jan. 19, 2010. For the next two years, police said Carney never changed the name on the National Grid gas and electric account, and never paid a single bill.

Police said Carney used over $4,000 worth of gas and electricity over the past two years.

Carney is charged with third-degree grand larceny, a class D felony, and theft of service, a misdemeanor, authorities stated. He was arraigned in Whitestown Court and was sent to county jail on $1,000 cash bail or bond.
