CAMDEN — Walter J. "Sonny" Baker, 76, of Union Street, passed away Friday December 16, 2011 at his home following a long illness. He was born Jan 29, 1935 in Rome, NY a son of Walter and Jessie Irish Baker. Sonny served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Arthur S. Moran American Legion Post #66 and the Lt. Victor Giles V.F.W. Post 6530. He was also active with the Camden Little League, several area bowling leagues, was a member of the Redfield Rod and Gun Club, and Redfield Sunday Morning Card Club. Sonny retired from Camden Wire Co., as a foreman in 1997 after nearly 40 years of employment. Following retirement Sonny enjoyed working for the Senior Network. On May 11, 1961 he married the former Emma "Susie" Durfey, she passed away Mar 20, 2007.
Surviving are one son, Steven of Camden, his companion, Barbara; two sisters, Joyce Fanning, Syracuse and Jessie ‘Tootsie’ Baker, Lee Center; a brother, Morris Baker, Syracuse; and countless relatives and friends. Sonny was also predeceased by a son, Walter "Sonny" Baker, Jr. on Sept 20, 2009; and one sister, Shirley; and five brothers, Floyd, Bill, Riley, Harold and Donald Baker.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday from the United Methodist Church, under the direction of the LaRobardiere Funeral Home, Inc., Camden, NY. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home, 109 Main Street.
