Town policeman quits force in domestic dispute probe
A New Hartford police officer has resigned from the force following accusations that he choked his wife during a domestic dispute.
State police said Christopher J. Burns, 42, of Clinton, was charged with misdemeanor strangulation after a dispute with his wife at their residence at 1:23 a.m. Saturday. Burns was arraigned in Kirkland Town Court, and is scheduled to reappear on Jan. 3. Burns was an eight-year veteran with the New Hartford Police, and served several years with the Sheriff’s Office prior to transferring.
Police Chief Michael Inserra said Burns resigned Wednesday, "effectively ending the administrative proceedings against him." Inserra said Burns was immediately placed on administrative leave following the arrest, and an internal investigation was started alongside the state police’s criminal investigation. The internal investigation ended with Burns’ resignation.
