Jean Berthold, 82, of Rome, N.Y., passed away on Nov. 9, 2011. She was born in Utica, N.Y., on May 13, 1929, the daughter of Benjamin and Bernice Palsyn. She graduated as class valedictorian from St. Frances DeSales High School in 1947 and subsequently obtained an associate’s degree in Dental Hygiene in Buffalo, N.Y. She worked as a dental hygienist at a variety of offices. She married Francis Coulson Berthold of Utica, N.Y., in 1953, and travelled the world with him until his death in 1970. The last thirty-four years of her life were happily spent with her husband Robert Jones.
In addition to her love of travel, Jean was an avid reader, especially of murder mysteries, and a passionate fan of James Bond movies. She also enjoyed exploring her Polish heritage, spending time with her good friends the Marsaks and the Higginses, and luxuriating with her beloved cat Patches.
Jean is survived by her husband Robert; her son Michael and his partner George Bradt, of Philadelphia, Pa.; her son Steven and his wife Nancy of Rome, N.Y.; her granddaughter Cassandra of Rome, N.Y.; her stepsons James R. Jones and his wife Nancy of Clark Mills, N.Y.; Jay R. Jones of Ava, N.Y.; and Jerry R. Jones of Rome, N.Y. She was pre-deceased by her brother Edward Palsyn and stepson Jeff R. Jones.
Funeral services will be held at Strong and Burns Funeral Home, 401 N. George Street on Saturday at 3 p.m. Family and friends may call from noon to 3 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in Rome Cemetery.
