Bulldogs coming off blowout victories in last two outings

Since their victory, the Bulldogs have ripped off blowout playoff victories against Cato-Meridian, 44-22, and last week against Onondaga in the semifinals, 45-28.

Dolgeville took a different route to the championship game.

They held off Beaver River on the last play of the game in the quarterfinals, after Beaver River elected to go for the two-point conversion but were stuffed at the goal line and Dolgeville was victorious, 19-18.

Then last week against Weedsport, the Blue Devils hung on to a 28-20 victory after they had mounted a 19-0 lead in the game. They will be seeking the school’s 16th Section III title. Connolly won a sectional during the 2008 season in his nine seasons since taking over for legendary head coach Jerry Walczak.

Green directs the offense with 605 yards passing with six TDs and has rushed for 659 yards with 10 scores, while Griffith has ran for 576 yards and 10 TDs, Murling has 557 yards on the ground with eight scores, and Barnes has 436 yards and nine TDs in the triple-option Bulldogs’ formation.

Flint has caught 11 balls for 281 yards and three TDs, and junior Marvin Sherman has a TD and 146 yards receiving.

On defense, Sherman leads the secondary with 11 interceptions as Barnes has five with 30 tackles, and sophomore Tim Harrison has 28 tackles.

The key will be the Bulldogs’ active linebacking core of Murling, team-high 75 total tackles, Griffith, 43 tackles with five sacks, Green, 37 tackles, Flint, 39 tackles with seven sacks, and junior Tyler Crandall with 56 total tackles.

Gates said he’s proud of the way that his team has battled all season in making it to the championship game, and said that he had a feeling in the first few weeks of the season that this team could become one of those memorable teams.

"Around Week 3 we didn’t talk specifically about winning a title, but I told the kids that they could be one of those specials teams that they could put something on the wall at the school that they could come back and look at 20 or 30 years down the road," Gates said.

"We took one week at a time, but this team has really come together. It’s a good crew, we need one more big one for them," added Gates.
