Camden moves on past RFA into title game

The Rome Free Academy and Camden field hockey teams battled to a 1-1 tie in the opening round of Camden’s O’Connor Classic Tournament on Friday, with the host Blue Devils moving on to championship game by winning on penalty strokes.

Nicole Williams and Aubrey Coon knocked in two successful scores in the penalty stroke-off, while Meghan McCormick scored for Rome.

Camden improved to 7-0-1, while Rome dropped to 4-2-1.

The Lady Knights grabbed the early lead in the first half when Kaysie Gregory fired in the opening score off an assist from McCormick. Camden got the tying score when Coon connected on a penalty stroke.

The Lady Blue Devils advanced to play Cazenovia this afternoon, and RFA went on to face New Hartford in the consolation game.

Cazenovia defeated New Hartford, 4-0, in Friday’s other first-round game.

VVS downs Whitesboro

In other field hockey action, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill secured a 4-1 win over visiting Whitesboro to jump to 8-1 overall on the season.

Briana Rascoe, Morgan Bernier, Alexis Kavanaugh and Ashley Palmer each scored a goal apiece for the Lady Red Devils, while Jenna Dunne made three assists.

Angeline Brennan scored the lone goal for Whitesboro as the Lady Warriors’ goalkeeper Katelynn Armstrong made 11 saves.

Remsen moves to 9-0

The Remsen girls soccer squad increased their undefeated mark to 9-0 overall with a 4-2 victory over Oriskany.

Erin O’Connor led the Lady Rams with two goals, as Joleen Marfone and Jessica Taylor scored a goal and made an assist apiece. Maria Roberts and Brittany Watterbury each had an assist, as well. Meghan Carlo scored both goals for Oriskany with one coming off an assist from Jenna Narolis.

Oriskany goaltender Alyssa Balfe made 22 saves, while Remsen netminder Megan Will picked up 13 saves.

Oriskany falls to 3-6 overall.

Westmoreland edges Old Forge

In other girls soccer action, Westmoreland picked up a 2-1 win over Old Forge.

Nicole Dardano knocked in both of Westmoreland’s two goals with one coming off an assist from Emily Gubbins.

Goalie Kelley Citrin grabbed nine saves in net as Westmoreland’s record goes to 5-2 overall.

RFA secures sectional birth

The RFA girls tennis team picked up a 4-2 victory over Liverpool and has qualified for the team sectionals scheduled to be held on Oct. 10.

Nicole Anken and Jessie Flaim each recorded singles victories for Rome, as the doubles teams of Alexis Bravo and Alyssa Cavalier, and Emily Closinski and Emily Peters both secured wins.
