Camden can’t make lead hold up at Dome
The Camden Blue Devils held a lead in the third quarter before the East Syracuse-Minoa Spartans broke out for three touchdowns in the quarter to come away with a 33-28 football victory on Friday night at the Carrier Dome in a season-opening Class A crossover game.
The Blue Devils, the home team, raced out to a 21-14 lead in the third after quarterback Joe O’Rourke hooked up with Jack Keil for an 18-yard TD pass as David Zeiders converted the point after attempt. ES-M then scored three unanswered rushing TDs, including two from quarterback Tyler Johnson on runs of 23 and 2 yards, while Jordan Barton scored on a 3-yard scamper to put the Spartans ahead, 26-21.
O’Rourke, who threw for 137 yards on 13-of-18 passing and two scores, also ran in a 7-yard TD before he connected with Keil again on a 2-yard strike before the end of the game.
Keil caught four passes for 42 yards while Jake Clark hauled in four balls for 40 yards. Clark also ran the ball five times for 45 yards and a score while Kevin Davis touched the ball 10 times for 103 yards on the ground.
On defense for the Blue Devils, Tyler LaPlante had nine tackles and Cody Sullivan had six.
The Blue Devils will host Cortland in a Class A crossover starting at 7 o’clock next Friday.
Westhill rallies past VVS
In a rematch of last season’s Class B Section III semifinal game, defending sectional champion Westhill scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to come away with a 38-28 home victory over Vernon-Verona-Sherrill in a Class B crossover game.
R.J. Chester kicked a 26-yard field goal to put the hosts ahead, 31-28, before Nathan Nigolian ran back an interception for a 35-yard touchdown to seal the win.
Red Devils senior running back Colin Way pounded his way for 139 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns while senior quarterback Tyler Mautner threw for 132 yards and hooked up with wideout Eli Cleveland for a 21-yard score. Matt Sliker then took an 80-yard punt return to the end zone to give VVS a 21-14 lead in the third quarter, before Way punched in a 7-yard TD in the fourth for a 28-21 lead before Westhill scored three straight times.
Nigolian also caught three of quarterback Mark McAnavey’s TD passes in the victory.
The Red Devils will return home to take on Class B East foe South Jefferson next Saturday at 2 p.m.
Onondaga too much for Falcons
Onondaga running back Jesus Rodriguez rushed for 133 yards and scored four touchdowns to help hand South Lewis a 44-19 road defeat in a season-opening Class D crossover.
The game was delayed for about an hour due to lightning.
Falcons senior tailback Dylan Peebles created some sparks of his own as he carried the ball 19 times for 101 yards and scored on two touchdowns on runs of 19 and 1 for the visitors.
Gabe Stinebrickner scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone to put the Falcons ahead, 7-6, in the second quarter, but the hosts got their ground game working to come away with the victory.
Kyle Fenton threw for 53 yards and Charlie Dorn ran for 32 yards. Peebles also led the team on defense with 10 tackles.
South Lewis will host Sandy Creek for a Class D crossover game on Friday at 7.
