Janet Hughes, 72, of Rome, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010 at University Hospital, Syracuse, with her family by her side. Born June 14, 1938 in Oneida, she was a daughter of Clarence and Pauline Tayntor Smith. Janet was united in marriage to Paul W. Hughes Sr. on July 25, 1959 at the Vernon Baptist church. She was a graduate of Oneida High School. Janet was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Rome. She was a past member of the Golden Girls Bowling League, volunteer at the Clothing Closet at First Baptist Church, former choir member at Grace Baptist and First Baptist churches, a member of W.M.U. and a volunteer hostess at the Rome VA clinic.
Janet was a loving wife and mother whose world revolved around her family. She was grateful for a second chance at life following a kidney transplant in 1991.
Surviving are her husband, Paul Sr.; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Craig Riegler, Point Rock; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Paul Jr. and Teresa Hughes, Phillip W. Hughes, all of Rome; brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Nancy Smith, Akron, NY. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a life long friend, Janice Brault.
Memorial services will be held at Grace Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 11, 2010. Interment in Rome Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Grace Baptist Church or the National Kidney Foundation, 731 James St., Suite 200, Syracuse, NY 13203.
