Area grads get Academic All-American honors

Holland Patent graduate and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute senior student-athlete Becky Bailey and Cazenovia College’s Katherin Hurlbut of Remsen and Jacklyn Bakken of Blossvale each received All-American Academic honors.

Bailey was selected to the 2010 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America College Division Softball First-Team, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

This is the second straight Academic All-America honor for Bailey, who is three-time Academic All-District selection.

The former Lady Golden Knight batted .348 this past season with 46 hits in 132 at-bats and drove in 32 runs and was 10 for 12 in stolen base attempts. She also maintained a 3.95 grade-point average while majoring in the chemical engineering field, and has been on the Dean’s List every semester while attending RPI and was a three-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree.

Hurlbut and Bakken each earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award while playing for Cazenovia College’s women’s volleyball team.

The squad is one of 75 NCAA Division II women’s volleyball teams whose members have minimum cumulative grade point of average of 3.30 during the fall academic year.

Hurlbut is a junior majoring in early childhood teacher education, and Bakken is a freshman with an undeclared major.
