Friday at 7 p.m. the Capitol Theatre, 220 W. Dominick St., presents "Drive-In" night, featuring two popular sci-fi/horror movies of the ‘50s and ‘60s.
The third annual event includes 1955’s "Tarantula" starring John Agar, Maria Corday, and Leo G. Carroll and directed by Jack Arnold, and 1966’s "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster," with Jun Fukuda directing an all-Japanese cast headed by Akira Takarada and Kumi Mizuno.
Admission is $3.50 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under. Tickets are free to Capitol Friends/Members.
"Tarantula" revolves around a series of growth experiments that goes haywire, causing a tarantula to attain gigantic proportions and terrorize the countryside.
"Tarantula" was the fifth film for Clint Eastwood, who appears as a fighter pilot.
Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide calls "Tarantula," "One of the best giant insect films, with fast pacing [and] convincing special effects¿"
"Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster" concerns itself with four shipwreck survivors who make their way to a seemingly deserted South Seas island, only to discover it is inhabited by a giant crab-like creature called Ebirah, as well as Godzilla and Mothra. The seventh film in the Godzilla series, it will be seen in a restored, wide screen (Tohoscope) Technicolor print.
In addition to the features there will be trailers from other sci-fi movies of the era, as well as "snipes" and concession commercials. All the films will be seen in 35mm prints. Drive-in type foods, including hotdogs and hamburgers, will be available.
Additional information is available from the Capitol Theatre at 337-6453.
