Infield single ends VVS pitcher’s bid for no-hitter
The Vernon-Verona-Sherrill baseball squad improved to 5-0 on Thursday with an 11-3 rout of visiting Sherburne-Earlville.
Pitcher Jason Dalton threw over five innings of no-hit baseball to lead the Red Devils before giving up an infield single with two outs in the sixth inning.
Dalton, 2-0, picked up the win on the hill as well while allowing the lone hit and striking out 11 batters in six innings.
Tyler Mautner was flawless at the plate batting 4 for 4 with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs. Steve Davis also hit 4 for 4 in the contest with three RBIs and a stolen base, while Jamie Cielinski hit a double, scored two runs and stole a bag.
Joe Moses received the loss for Sherburne-Earlville after six innings of work with six strikeouts and two walks, and Carter Cole drove in both of the team’s two runs.
VVS will visit Clinton in a Tri-Valley League contest on Monday at 4:15 p.m.
Bulldogs bounce back
After dropping their first game of the season to VVS on Tuesday, the Westmoreland Bulldogs battled back to score a 5-2 victory over host Adirondack in a Center State Conference crossover matchup.
The 6-1 overall Bulldogs sealed the win by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning with the game tied at 1-1 to secure starting hurler Dan Smith with the winning decision.
Smith threw a complete game three-hitter while recording nine strikeouts and walking seven batters.
Travis Rogers batted a perfect 3 for 3 and scored two runs, and Craig Pawlikowski was 2 for 2 with a run and a RBI.
Cody Buhler hit a double and scored a run to lead 5-2 overall Adirondack, and Dylon Lyon was the losing pitcher.
Westmoreland hosts Hamilton on Monday in a CSC Division III matchup at 4:30 p.m.
Oriskany falls in eight innings
Oriskany took an early lead but was unable to hang on and dropped a 4-2 eight-inning decision to Frankfort-Schuyler.
The Redskins opened with a 2-0 lead in the first before starting hurler Mike Bunal gave it up on one shot from a two-run home run by Joe Gatto to tie it up.
Frankfort-Schuyler then went on to score two unearned runs off relievers Steve Rossi and Travis Tyler in the eighth inning to seal the win.
Andrew Talarico struck out four batters and went the distance to earn the win for Frankfort and Rossi received the loss, while Nick Sparagna and Talarico each had two hits apiece to lead Frankfort’s offense.
Tyler McCorduck and Tyler each hit a double, and Bunal hit a triple for Oriskany.
Oriskany falls to 3-4 overall and will host Morrisville-Eaton on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
