AAU basketball squad holds tryouts Sunday

Rome’s Stan Evans Select AAU boys basketball team will be holding tryouts on Sunday at the Griffiss Air Force Base Gymnasium from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Ages for the tryouts are 12 and under and 13 years old if the participant is in the sixth grade or turned 13 after Sept. 1.

There will be a $5 charge for all participants attending as well as a $5 entry fee if the entrant makes the team. All parents must fill out waiver and registration forms before tryouts can begin.

Bulldogs remain in state rankings

The Westmoreland boys basketball team remained in the top-20 for the Class C New York State rankings in this week’s edition of the New York State Sportswriters Association newsletter edited and published by Neil Kerr.

The Bulldogs fell to 20th but remained in the rankings despite suffering a 42-37 loss to Tully in the Section III Class C-1 finals last Friday at the Utica Memorial Auditorium, and wrapped up their season with a 17-4 overall record.

Tully moved up to No. 5 in the rankings, while West Canada Valley is the No. 1 seed in Class C. West Canada Valley went on to lose to Tully, 54-45, in the Class C finals on Tuesday.

New York Mills remains at the top of the chart as the No. 1 seed for Class D with a 21-0 overall record.
