Ex-instructor pleads not guilty to DWI charges

A former part-time sociology teacher at Mohawk Valley Community College denied several drunken driving charges during an appearance in County Court.

Talitha Gorea, 33, of Whitesboro, was indicted Feb. 17 on two counts each of driving while intoxicated, driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or greater, drinking while driving and one count each of seventh-degree possession of a controlled substance, failure to obey police, failure to stop at a stop sign, speeding and driving the wrong way on a one-way street. Gorea pleaded not guilty before Judge John Balzano Tuesday. Her case was adjourned for a report to March 23.

Police said at 7:08 p.m. Oct. 12, Gorea was pulled over on Bleecker Street and failed several field sobriety tests. Gorea was also found with an Ecstasy pill and an open alcoholic drink. Authorities said she was taken to the Utica Police Station and registered a blood alcohol content of 0.13 percent. Ticketed for drunken driving, police said she was released into a relative’s care.

Less than five hours later, at 11:40 p.m., police said Gorea was pulled over a second time on Lansing Street. Gorea was caught speeding at 55 mph in the 30 mph zone, police said, and was driving the wrong way on the one-way street. Authorities said she also did not pull over right away for an officer’s lights and siren. Gorea was arrested again, and registered a BAC of 0.11 percent, according to the indictment.

Gorea was a part-time sociology teacher at MVCC at the time of her arrest, but school officials said she was terminated shortly after.
