Berry, Croll earn Empire 8 basketball honors
Rome Free Academy graduate Jessica Berry and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill graduate Devon Croll of the Utica College women’s basketball team earned Empire 8 All-Conference First-Team honors this season.
The junior guard Berry was named the Empire 8 Women’s Basketball Player of the Year and earned first-team honors for the third time by leading the conference with a 21.9 point per game average and sitting second in rebounding at 10 per game and field goal percentage at 48.8 percent.
She also averaged 22.2 points per game in Empire 8 play, which is nearly seven points per game more than the next highest-scoring player.
Croll joined Berry on the first team after earning second-team honors a year ago by finishing the regular season averaging 12.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.7 steals per game.
Local grads lead MVCC to women’s track title
Rome natives Nicole Wasco, Hannah Hoffman and Holland Patent graduate Sara Garrett helped the Mohawk Valley Community College’s women’s indoor track and field team win the NJCAA Region Championship in Rochester.
MVCC scored 174 team points at the championship while SUNY Delhi scored 116 with runner-up honors.
The freshman Wasco was first in the 20-pound weight throw with a distance of 39 feet, 3.75 inches, and also set a MVCC record with a distance of 38 feet, 2 inches in the shot put while later being named MVCC’s Athlete of the Week.
The sophomore Hoffman contributed by winning the 3,000-meter race in a time of 11 minutes, 7.74 seconds and the 5,000-meter run in 19:15.42.
Garrett was a member of the 1,600-meter relay team’s championship win along with Kayla May of Norwich, Amber Craig of Adams Center and Gen Dzialo of New Hartford.
Scholarship bowling tourney this weekend
The 2010 New York State Youth Scholarship Tournament Regional Finals will take place this weekend at Hi-Skor Lanes in Earlville with several local bowlers competing.
Katie Evans and Jenna Zakala will compete on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with Zakala in the girls handicap for grades 5-8 and Evans in the girls nine and above handicap.
Ashley Thomas, Korena Kinney and Tommy Hluska bowl at 2 p.m. with Thomas in the girls grade four and under group, and Kinnye in the grade 5-8 handicap. Hluska is in the grade nine and above group.
Bowlers Joey Reno, Jimmy Fiaschetti, Jessie Hyle and Rob Pook hit the lanes on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Reno is in the grade 5-8 group, Hyle in the girls scratch open, Fiaschetti in the boys grade 5-8 handicap, and Pook in the grade four and under handicap.
Travis Holmes bowls in the boys scratch open at 2 p.m.
Baseball clinic rescheduled to March 5
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s seventh annual baseball coaches clinic originally scheduled for today at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and Clark Sports Center Gymnasium in Cooperstown has been postponed.
The clinic has been rescheduled for next Friday at the Hall of Fame with the previous schedule of workshops and speakers remaining the same.
Registration for the one-day workshop will continue to be open until the first session begins at 8:30 a.m. for $75.
Friday’s lectures will be preceded by an informal question and answer session at TJ’s Place Restaurant on Thursday, March 4 at 8 p.m.
