Holland Patent grad scores 1,000th point
UTICA — Holland Patent graduate and SUNYIT junior boys basketball player David Golembiowski went over his 1,000th-point in his career to help lead the team to an 85-70 victory over the College of St. Joseph in the first round of the Wildcat Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night at the Campus Center gymnasium.
Golembiowski, who was the reigning North Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year, had 29 points and 12 rebounds to help the Wildcats improve to 1-0 on the season.
He also ranks ninth all-time in the school’s history with 1,020 career points.
Fazio head coach of new MVCC program
UTICA — Mohawk Valley Community College has announced the school will be forming a new women’s lacrosse team at the college and it will be coached by Gina Fazio on an interim basis.
The new team will help MVCC become the ninth National Junior College Athletic Association Region III college to offer the sport and will now field 11 men’s and women’s teams at the college.
Fazio is a native of Watertown where she competed in soccer, basketball, and lacrosse before she went to Jefferson Community College and eventually to SUNY Cortland to continue playing lacrosse. She also advanced to the NCAA’s Division III Final Four in 2006 with SUNY Cortland, and individually became the 29th Player in the college’s history to eclipse 100 career points with 119 points and be named twice to the All SUNYAC Team.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in Health Education from SUNY Cortland and a Master’s in Literacy from SUNY Potsdam. Fazio is the instructor in the Center for Language and Learning Design at MVCC.
Lady Hawks end season on high note
UTICA — The MVCC Lady Hawks women’s soccer team closed out its season with a 4-1 win over Genesee Community College as the team was led by Oriskany graduate Nicole DiNitto to take third place in the NJCAA National Final Four Tournament held at Herkimer County Community College.
The sophomore forward DiNitto had a goal and two assists in the first half to end the Lady Hawks season at 18-4 overall.
DiNitto’s performance also landed her an Athlete of the Week honor by MVCC after she also netted an All-Tournament Team honor during the tournament.
She is a Liberal Arts major.
