Scouting for Food info Saturday, pickup on Nov. 14

Saturday the Boy Scouts of America, Revolutionary Trails Council kicks off its annual Scouting for Food drive collecting food donations for the needy throughout the Mohawk Valley and surrounding areas.

Scouting for Food is the council’s largest service project involving thousands of Scouts and volunteers across six counties in Central New York.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers from across the Revolutionary Trails Council will be placing yellow tags on doors across the area. The tags request donations of non-perishable items. Scouts will return to pick these bags up on Saturday morning, Nov. 14. Donations should be placed on doorsteps for pick up before 8 a.m. that morning.

Food donations needed include canned items such as vegetables, meats, chili, soups or juices, and baby formula. Boxed or bagged meals and pastas are also welcome. The ideal food donation would include one of each. "Please—nothing perishable, frozen or in glass," scout officials said adding, "Monetary donations cannot be accepted."

After collecting the items, Scouts will distribute the food to local food banks, churches, and other community organizations that support our needy populations. Other partners include: The American Legion, the VFW, local churches, food banks, and other community-minded businesses.

If Scouts miss your home, feel free to direct your donations to the Boy Scouts of America, Revolutionary Trails Council at 1401 Genesee Street, Utica NY 13501.

In addition to regional activities like Scouting for Food Scouts, their leaders, parents, and employees of the local council contribute nearly 400,000 hours in community service each year.

The Revolutionary Trails Council serves more than 8,000 young men and women, in a variety of age specific programs.

That’s in the counties of Oneida, Herkimer, Madison, Hamilton, Lewis, and Otsego.  The programs are made possible through partnerships with over 180 churches, schools, civic organizations, and businesses as well as the dedication of over 3,000 adult volunteers and Friends of Scouting.
