HOLLAND PATENT — A highway memorial plaque to honor fallen Marine Lance Cpl. Blaise A. Oleski of Floyd will be dedicated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Veterans Day, on state Route 365 near Holland Patent Middle School.
Assemblyman David R. Townsend, Jr., R-115, Sylvan Beach, who sponsored legislation for the plaque placement, will be joined at the dedication by local officials, representatives from the Rome Marine Corps League, and over 50 troops from Camp Lejeune, N.C., where Oleski was based.
Oleski, 22, the son of Paul and Theresa Oleski of 8381 East Floyd Road, was killed in action in Afghanistan on April 8. He was a 2004 graduate of Holland Patent High School.
The "Marine Lance Cpl. Blaise Oleski Memorial Highway" plaque will stand permanently along Route 365, according to an Assembly announcement. The new roadway name will be ceremonial and does not require the state to officially redesignate the existing highway, the statement said.
"Blaise dedicated his life to upholding the best ideals of our country," said Townsend in the announcement. "On Veterans Day, we honor the service of Marine Lance Cpl. Blaise Oleski and we dedicate a place to his lasting memory."
