Son faces felony in assault critically injuring his father

ONEIDA — A man was sent to Madison County Jail after being charged with critically injuring his father by repeatedly punching him in the face Monday.

The father remains at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and has not regained consciousness, Oneida Police said.

William L. VanPatten III, 25, of 122 N. Main St., Apt. 3, was involved in an altercation with William L. VanPatten Jr., 47, of the same address, at 9:58 p.m., police said. The elder VanPatten suffered a broken jaw in three places, a broken nose and several facial fractures, as well as bleeding and loss of consciousness. VanPatten Jr. was listed in critical condition Friday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

VanPatten III was charged with second-degree assault, a class D felony, on Tuesday. He was arraigned in City Court and sent to Madison County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond. VanPatten re-appeared in court Thursday, and his case was adjourned to Dec. 4.
