Thunderbolts handed loss by Oriskany

The Rome Thunderbolts of the Eastern Collegiate Baseball League suffered their second loss in as many games as they dropped a non-league game to the Oriskany Blazers, 5-3, on Wednesday night at DeLutis Field.

Mario Roefaro pitched a complete game and timely Oriskany hitting handed the Thunderbolts another loss after they had lost to the Sherrill Silversmiths earlier this week.

The Thunderbolts fell into a bit of bad luck in the first inning as left fielder Pete Calandra hosed out a Blazers base runner at home plate to end the inning, but instead the home plate umpire called Thunderbolts third baseman Kirt Broedel for an interference call and the runners was ruled safe followed by another runner coming in to score to put the visitors up 2-0.

Calandra would get one of the runs back at the dish with an RBI single to drive in Lane Potter in the following inning before the Rome team would take the lead in the bottom of the third as Ryan Brockett scored on a passed ball and Roman TJ Abone scored on a fielder’s choice by John Carbone.

Lance Ratchford had an RBI double for Oriskany to tie the score in the fifth before the visitors added two runs in the top of the ninth to come away with the win. Roefaro finished with eight strikeouts.

The Thunderbolts, who dropped to 16-6 overall and remained at 9-2 in the ECBL, will look to snap their two-game slide tonight against the CNY Angels in a non-league matchup at DeLutis Field beginning at 6 o’clock.
