Roger J. Farney Sr.
HOLLAND PATENT — Roger J. Farney Sr., 77, of Holland Patent, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2009 with his loving family by his side. He was born on April 24, 1931 in Holland Patent a son of the late Peter H. and Susie I. (Dicob) Farney. He was a 1949 graduate of Holland Patent Central School and married Gwendolyn J. Yourdon on December 18, 1954. On December 31, 1992, he married Joan Mahoney. She passed away in 2005.
Roger was a lifetime dairy farmer, who loved farming and being his own boss. He purchased the family homestead from his father in 1956 and ran a thriving business for 50 years. At its peak, his farm was one of the largest milk producers in the area. He was a talented carpenter and overall handyman. Through the years, he built three barn additions as well as the family home. He was very active and continued to run the farm until 2005 when he retired at the age of 74. While not farming, he enjoyed bowling, investing in the stock market and horse racing.
He is survived by his first wife Gwendolyn J. Appley and her husband Gordon of Utica, NY; his children, Roger J. Farney Jr. and his wife Cynthia of Buffalo, NY; Deborah J. Hardie and her husband Mark of Barneveld, NY; Scott D. Farney and his wife Christine of Thomasville, GA; Lawrence A. Farney and his wife Mary Jane of Voorheesville, NY; Gerald H. Farney and his companion David DeLoriea of Bolton Landing, NY; and Sandra D. Farney and her husband Michael Brockway of Holland Patent, NY. He also leaves his grandchildren, Roger Farney III and his wife Anna, Julie Farney; Christopher Hardie; Denise Carlton and her husband Randy; Allison Farney, Olivia Farney and Adam Farney. In addition, he leaves his brothers, Earl J. and Merle Farney of Sacramento, CA; Wesley P. and Yvonne Farney of Floyd, NY; his sister, Georgia A. and Michael Yaworski of Carlisle, PA; several nieces and nephews and a special friend Mary Sutherland of Herkimer.
He was predeceased by a sister Joyce I. Murch, and a great-grandson Jeremiah Carlton.
The Family wishes to offer a special thank you to Roger’s caregivers during his illness: Betty Brown, Diana Titus, Katherine Voorhees, Shirley Yadow, Lakeisha Jones, and Angel Thomas. Your care, compassion and kindness will never be forgotten.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Historic Old St. John’s Church in Utica where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Utica. Calling hours are Monday from 5:00 8:00 at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 7944 Steuben Street, Holland Patent.
