Tickets are now on sale for a performance by an Irish band, which will raise green cash for a Rome Weed & Seed scholarship fund.
Contemporary Irish musicians "The Elders" will perform Jan. 17, at the Capitol Theatre.
The band is returning for an encore performance. Organizers said those who attended last years event know "this one-of-a-kind event features original music that transcends the stereotypical notion of Celtic music.
The Elders deliver it with passion and fire, and audiences everywhere (including Romans) will again dance in the isles along with their original songs that are mystical, comical, political and cultural, while covering a wide variety of topics such as poverty, civil war, family bonds, spirituality, love and friendship."
General admission tickets are $25 in advance, $17.50 for students and seniors 60 years young and up and $30 at the door. Tickets are available at: Gary’s Music, 229 W. Dominick St.; Accents of Ireland, New Hartford Shopping Center; Rome Federal Credit Union, 937 Seneca St.; Rome YMCA, 301 W. Bloomfield St.; Oneida YMCA, 701 Seneca St., Oneida; and online at www.ymcatrivalley.org.
Also performing will be local musicians from the YMCA Creative Center for the Arts program and dancers from the Butler Shaheen School of Dance.
Proceeds from this concert will go towards the "Prudy Ellinger" scholarship fund that was established in memory of one of Weed & Seed’s founding members. The scholarship fund is designed to benefit a local youth who wishes to further their education.
Funds will also be applied towards projects that cannot be funded through the U.S. Department of Justice Grant that pays for the Weed & Seed program, including the community gardens and paint giveaway.
In addition, a portion of all ticket sales will be applied towards the renovation fund of the historic Capitol Theatre. This theater features one of only a few Moller theatre organs in the nation. The organ was restored in 2002 and since then has been used on a regular basis to accompany silent movies. The Theatre is also raising money to rebuild the marquee that once adorned the front of the building.
