RFA field hockey squad tops Little Falls for third place

The Rome Free Academy field hockey team defeated Section III rival Little Falls, 2-1, on Saturday in the consolation game of the 13th annual Knight Time Classic at the Stadium.

RFA, which improved to 7-6 overall this season, gave the visiting Little Falls girls their second loss in as many games after they had started their season with 10 straight wins. Stacie Skidmore and Delaney Hughes each tallied a goal as Kaysie Gregory had an assist to lead Rome offensively. Rome netminder Alex Towne, who was named to the all-tournament team, tallied five saves on five shots faced between the pipes for the Lady Black Knights, who fell to Greene in the opening round on Friday night. Ashleigh Nelson also made the All-Tournament team for RFA.

Greene, which improved to 12-1 overall, shut out Queensbury, 7-0, in the championship game as three different girls scored two goals and Devyn Staley recorded the shutout.

Brookfield bows to Rome Catholic

In girls soccer action, Rome Catholic defeated visiting Brookfield by a 2-1 margin.

Maureen Moulton kicked the Romans onto the score board with an unassisted goal on a corner kick in the 25th minute of regulation. Kaitlyn Davidson would add another score off an assist from Kim Quinn and the Lady Redwings hung on for the victory as Britanni Benenati tallied 11 saves in net.

Rome cruises to a top finish

The RFA boys cross country team raced to a ninth-place finish during the Grout Run Invitational held at Central Park in Schenectady.

Shenendehowa came away with first place honors out of the 15 area teams as Alex Leuchanka finished first overall with a 13:17 time.

Top place finishers for Rome included Frank and Joe Mastraccio, Tyler and Connor Butters, Kagen Dewey, Brandon Trautner and Thomas Gymburch.

Oriskany boys, girls sweep meet

In other cross country action, the Oriskany boys and girls squads turned in strong finishes during the Sherburne-Earlville Invitational meet.

The Redskins finished with top honors in the seven team event as three different runners finished in the top five overall during the event. Hamilton finished second overall as host Sherburne-Earlville finished third.

Top place finishes for Oriskany included Jesse Pratt, Eric O’Donnell, Shane Hughes, Curreri Julian, Travis Basciotta, Jake Murphy and Gino Velardi.

The Lady Redskins also were victorious with two runners finishing in the top ten as Unatego and West Canada Valley finished second and third respectively.

Top finishers for Oriskany included Kajee Graziadei, Connie Siebold, Sierra Roman, Allison Bates, Stephanie Weigel and Nicole Buehler.

VVS glides to top race finish

The Vernon-Verona-Sherrill boys and girls track squads raced to top finishes during the Tully Cross Country Invitational at the Tully high school.

The Red Devils’ boys team finished 10th overall as Fayetteville-Manlius took first-place honors. Cicero-North Syracuse took second as Maine-Endwell finished strong with a third place finish at the event.

Leading runners for VVS included Matt Femia, Adam Litterio, Zane Hasty and Ian Adams. The Lady Red Devils also had a solid outing as they placed seventh overall as F-M also took top billings in the girls event, as well.

Leading the way for the VVS girls were Lauren MacDonald, Emily Hudson, Kerry Miley, Brittany Fort, Emily Tallarino, Brooke Waite, McKenna Novak and Devon Dunbar.
