Area winners at Woodsmen’s Days
Many local competitors were among the winners in the New York State Woodsmen’s Field Days competitions held Aug. 15-17 at the Boonville/Oneida County fairgrounds. Events and local participants who took home top awards are:
Classic Canoe/Kayak Races
Solo Canoe: Tom Mazuzan, Lee, first place.
Two Person Canoe: Paul and Joann Olney, Westernville, first; Joseph Siegel, Taberg, and Mark Olney, Westernville, second; Skip Shoemaker, Barneveld, and Jim Muller, Holland Patent, third.
Solo Kayak: Dan Kraeger, Port Leyden, first; Jason Sawyer, Boonville, second; Dave Bacon, Mexico, N.Y., third.
Joe Bourgeois and Nick Hartley, both of Boonville, took second and third in the 5,800 pound stock gas category; Matt Merriam and Patrick Croniser, both of Boonville, took second and third in the 6,200 pound street modified gas category; Craig Smith of Ava was first, Mike Lalonde of Taberg was second and Dave Peterson of Boonville was third in the 8,500 pound stock diesel category; Don Donahue and Jason Owens, both of Rome, took second and third in the 9,000 pound modified diesel category.

Ryan Dezalia, of Clinton, was first in the male age 1-14 category; Sean Dezalia, of Clinton, was first in the male age 15-19 category; Chandler Mellon, Camden, Chrissy Crowell, Lowville, and Samatha Wheelock, Boonville, took the top spots respectively in the female age group 15-19.
Winners in other age categories included: Chris Crowley, Boonville, Katrina Neilley, Rome, Matthew Downs, Clinton, Ryan Jennings, Constableville, Amanda Phillon, Boonville, Jack Bernard, Boonville; Lisa Coleman, Rome, Bruce Palmer, Rome, Ann Meisenhelter, Rome, Bruce Gaylord, Boonville, and Larry Purvines, Lowville. Kermit Cadrette, of Rome, placed first in the male age 70-99 category. Second place awards went to: Dean Rhinehart, Lowville, Jodi Fox, Boonville, Jillian Ringwald, Boonville, Dan Pierson, Oriskany, Dawn Brown, Lowville, Leah Kiser, Taberg, Tim Wheelock, Boonville, Joanne Hewitt, Sylvan Beach, Chris Neiley, Rome, and Diane Baker, Lee Center. Third place winners in the various age groups were: Joeline Carey, Boonville, Matt Healt, Forestport, John Vergis, Whitesboro, Melissa Parchych, Holland Patent, Jason Pane, Oriskany, Lucy Kiel, McConnellsville, Dawn Evans, Remsen, Nancy Dukett, Lee Center, and David Katz, Clinton.
Jeff Tarbania, Rome, voted the sexiest beard; Daniel Kriest, Boonville, voted the thinnest beard; and Bill Acomb, Rome, had the best mustache.
