PORTLAND, Ore. — Rome native Nicole Williams captured most valuable player honors as she helped guide her team to the title while competing in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s National Championship tournament.

Williams led New York City’s Gotham Girls roller derby squad to the crown by defeating Chicago’s Windy City Rollers, 134-66.

The tournament, which is made up of the top four teams from the East and West Region, was held over three days from Nov. 14-16. Williams, playing under the alias "Bonnie Thunders," was the offensive charge for Gotham after nailing 15 jammer shots and picking up 12 box points to help secure an MVP award.

The 2001 Rome Free Academy graduate was also a major contributor in helping Gotham win their two other contests against Philadelphia, 189-52, and Albuquerque, 182-25.

She had 13 jammer shots and eight box points against Philadelphia and 12 jammer shots with four box points against Albuquerque.

Williams was a four-year varsity soccer player while attending RFA. She also participated in figure skating in Rome and the Syracuse University synchronized skating team while attending SUNY College of Environmental Sciece and Forestry. Williams later moved to New York City and joined the Gotham Girls in 2006, when she was selected as the league’s rookie of the year. She was later selected co-MVP last season.
