Fair marks 130 years with concert
BOONVILLE — In celebration of the 130th Boonville-Oneida County Fair, the Boonville Concert Band will be performing on Tuesday, July 24 at the gazebo in the little park.
The concert will begin at 6 p.m. just prior to the fair parade. The band is comprised of accomplished instrumentalists from a wide area surrounding Boonville. Some members have traveled from as far as Oneida, Sauquoit, and Watertown to participate in this fine group.
The Boonville Concert Band continues to offer a varied program, consisting of Patriotic tunes, Folk melodies, and medleys from musicals. This week highlighted pieces will include the concert march “Parade of the Tall Ships”, by Jay Chattaway. Chattaway is well known for writing both concert band compositions, and movie scores. “Parade of the Tall Ships” features the brass section, and is both powerful and exciting. Selections from “The Music Man” will highlight the songs “Till There was You”, “Seventy-Six Trombones”, and “Goodnight, My Someone.” These Meredith Wilson tunes are always a summertime favorite. In addition, the Concert Band will be playing some time-honored patriotic selections such as “Stars and Stripes Forever”, and “Armed Forces Salute.” This dynamic musical collection promises to appeal to all music listeners.
Continuing as the conductor for this season, is Martin Ischia, former Adirondack Central high school band director. Martin, a well-known area musician, has been associated with the band for over thirty years. The band is co-managed by Ryan O’Neil, current high school band director at Adirondack High School, and Heather Nunneker, high school vocal director at Adirondack High School, and has sound provided by Mitch Maryhugh, pool and AV director at Adirondack High School.
The next concert in this series of four will be held next week on Friday, Aug. 3 at 7 p.m.
The Boonville Concert Band is sponsored by the village and town of Boonville, The Woodsman’s Field Days Association, and has a grant from the Pratt Northam Foundation. This event is free and open to the public, although donations are always accepted, and appreciated. All proceeds go toward the continuance of the band.
