Strough paving project is topic of special meeting

A paving project at Strough Middle School will be among the topics at a Board of Education special meeting Wednesday morning.

The board meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the school district office, 409 Bell Road.

Among items at the meeting, the board will review bids and consider awarding a contract for paving of a rear lot area at Strough, board President Paul Fitzpatrick said today.

A special meeting is needed because the board’s next regular meeting is not until Oct. 4, and the paving contract needs to be awarded sooner in an effort to get the work done during the fall paving season, Fitzpatrick explained.

The Strough building, at 801 Laurel St., reopened Sept. 6 for the start of the 2018-19 school year after being closed the previous two years for a $25.4 million renovation throughout the site. Its students, who include grades 7 and 8, temporarily used other buildings during that period.

Fitzpatrick was asked if Wednesday’s meeting would include more discussion of concerns raised at last week’s meeting by Rome NAACP officials regarding the school board’s practices. Some board members had suggested then that the issues could be addressed further at a possible special meeting.

But Fitzpatrick said it would not a topic on Wednesday. He anticipated it would be discussed more at another meeting.
