RFA girls may join with Clinton regional team for ice hockey
Participation by the Rome school district in a combined varsity girls hockey team with the Clinton school district will be considered Thursday night by the Board of Education.
Among other items before the board will be a $63,969 kitchen equipment purchase, and upcoming retirement dates for four longtime district staff members.
The board meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the school district office, 409 Bell Road. On the agenda:
• A resolution calls for a memorandum of agreement regarding a Clinton school district invitation for the Rome school district to take part in a combined varsity girls hockey team for the current 2018-19 school year.
The Clinton district is hosting a regional team for 2018-19, and has been accepted to compete within the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, the resolution said.
The cost of operating the team will be borne by the Clinton Sports Boosters organization, and will be raised and donated to the Clinton school district before the season is anticipated to start in mid-November, the resolution added. The team’s operation will be conducted under the authority of the Clinton district.
The Rome district has previously participated in some combined teams with area districts for other sports, school board President Paul Fitzpatrick said today. Such agreements are “pretty common” when schools otherwise do not have enough participants for a team, he added.
• A proposed $63,969 contract for kitchen equipment is to be awarded to Joseph Flihan Co. of Utica.
The equipment would be for Rome Free Academy, according to the school district office. Purchases for the district’s food service department come from its budget, which is a self-supporting entity with its own funding, said district Superintendent Peter C. Blake.
• A resolution calls for accepting, with regret, the retirements of four employees with various retirement dates during the 2018-19 year.
Among them are Lisa DiMaggio, teacher at Strough Middle School, effective Dec. 20 this year; Mary DeMatteo, teacher at RFA, effective Jan. 26, 2019; Cecilia Fiorini, senior typist, effective Feb. 27, 2019; Patrick Kessler, grounds maintenance worker, effective Oct. 29 this year.
