The New York State School for the Deaf on Turin Street will host the 2015 Northeast Regional Academic Bowl competition from Thursday through Sunday.

All teams will travel to Rome Thursday afternoon, with the opening ceremony taking place Thursday evening.

Competitions will be held Friday and Saturday. The championship match will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. established the first National Academic Bowl in 1997 with the goal of promoting academic competition among school teams, and to foster academic excellence and achievement among deaf and hard of hearing students across the country.

There are five regions, and each region consists of 16-18 teams.

Each team has four players and two coaches.

The Academic Bowl competition consists of a question and answer game of general knowledge and quick recall. Questions are drawn from several categories, including social studies, math, language and literature, science and technology, the arts, deaf studies, pop culture, leisure and sports.

Of the 16 teams competing from the Northeast, the top four will head to Gallaudet University to compete in the national competition in April.
