Info meeting for ‘Rig Rescue’ drone event March 16
An informational meeting for people interested in forming a team for an upcoming “Rig Rescue” drone challenge will be held March 16 from 7-9 p.m. at the Utica Jewish Community Center, said the CNY Drones group.
Interested persons also can download the “Rig Rescue” challenge manual and register at www.cnydrones.org online.
“Rig Rescue,” to be held April 15 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at SUNY Polytechnic Institute Campus Center gym in Marcy, is open to teams of two-to-five members, for ages 11 and up, said CNY Drones.
School, neighborhood, family, and sports teams are among the categories.
Half of the anticipated teams are currently registered for the 10-team event, said CNY Drones. The “Rig Rescue” challenge theme is based on a story of a malfunctioning off-shore oil platform, and teams will seek to “help secure the facility and retrieve platform workers and data,” said CNY Drones. The event will take place in a 30-by-60-foot netted drone competition arena, with teams individually flying rounds using drones.
The public is invited to view the free event and take part in interactive STEM exhibits and pick up drone safety information.
A test flight zone, flight simulator zone and an Experience FPV (First Person View) zone will be available for spectators between team flights. The event is a community project, hosted by the SUNY Poly Academy of Model Aeronautics University Model Aviation Student Club with the assistance of the CNY Drones Model Student Aviation Club.
CNY Drones said “Rig Rescue” is part of its efforts to promote STEM, provide awareness of drone technology educational and employment opportunities, and build a safe flying recreational drone community.
