Group to host ‘Drone Information Day’ to promote STEM-learning
A “Drone Informational Day” will be held Oct. 1 from 9 a.m.-noon at Griffiss International Airport, hosted by the recently formed CNY Drones community group in cooperation with Oneida County, according to an announcement by program organizers.
The public is invited to the event at Building 785, Bomber Drive, off Ellsworth Road. It will include learning or sharing drone information for students and adults involved in or wishing to become involved in “this new high-tech activity,” according to CNY Drones.
The event will include demonstrations of various drones, information on future STEM-based (science, technology, engineering, math) activities, and team formation assistance including “encouraging older students and adults to mentor younger counterparts,” the CNY Drones announcement added.
CNY Drones is a volunteer group promoting STEM-based drone exhibitions, competitions, educational opportunities and safe practices, according to its Facebook page.
CNY Drones was launched by Lisa and Bob Payne, eight-year coaches of the RoboSpartans robotics team of New Hartford that has included students from Utica-area school districts plus home schoolers.
CNY Drones said “they’re bringing together local
interest groups to develop a coordinated approach to promoting STEM through the use of drones.”
CNY Drones Volunteer Administrator Lisa Payne said “we’re applying our experience with growing robotics to creating sustainable drone-based STEM activities.”
“Anyone who watched us over the years knows how committed we are to the success of STEM events. I’m pleased that local STEM and drone interests came together so quickly,” Lisa Payne added.
Clubs, engineering groups and businesses with drone interests are welcome to contact CNY Drones, the group said.
