BOE approves DerCola as new varsity football coach
Completing appointments of spring season coaches plus Rome Free Academy’s new varsity football coach, a combining sports contract for girls’ lacrosse, and academic commendations for five athletic terms were addressed by the Board of Education.
Among items Thursday night:
• The board approved spring season coach appointments that included the addition of eight names to those who were on the agenda that was issued Wednesday.
The additional persons have finished certification requirements including for CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and first-aid, said school district Superintendent Peter C. Blake. This should complete all of the spring season appointments, he said.

• In a fall season appointment, Charles “Jake” DerCola was approved as RFA’s new varsity football coach, at a salary of $6,141.
DerCola is a “great choice” and should be “good for the program,” board President Paul Fitzpatrick said Friday, adding “I’m looking forward to it.” DerCola, a physical education teacher and head football coach at Notre Dame High School in Utica, was recommended by a search committee led by school district Athletic Director Michael Stamboly. DerCola succeeds Theodore “Ted’ Swavely, who had been coach for nine years and said in November that he was resigning.
• A Section III combining sports contract for girls lacrosse that was approved by the board will enable some Camden school district students to be part of the Rome district’s team, board Vice President Paul Hagerty said Friday.
The Rome district had received a request from Camden regarding some girls lacrosse players there but “not a team” for them, Hagerty explained. Such requests are “not unusual,” he said, noting that the district tries to accommodate the students without taking away spots on teams for Rome students.
• In a commendation for academic achievements, the board extended congratulations to RFA teams for girls varsity basketball, volleyball, and indoor track, plus boys varsity swimming and diving as well as varsity hockey.
They received scholar/athlete team awards from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association by achieving winter marking period averages of 90 or higher, according to the board resolution.
Fitzpatrick said he has “always been impressed by this particular award.” He credited students who, during varsity team seasons and the commitments involved, are “able to maintain high academic standards.”
