VERONA — The Madison-Oneida BOCES CTE (Career and Technical Education) division has formed a partnership with AmeriCU Credit Union to enhance its personal finance curriculum for high school seniors, announced the Verona-based BOCES.

AmeriCU representatives spoke with several BOCES CTE classes as a kick-off to a new online course that will introduce students in participating classes to basic concepts of financial responsibility.

The curriculum covers savings accounts, budgeting, types of banks, credit cards, interest rates, writing checks, managing debt, credit scores, student loans, renting versus owning a home, taxes, insurance, identity theft, consumer fraud and investing, said BOCES.

“We have always covered components of personal finance, integrated into various parts of the curriculum. In the past, we have relied on texts and guide sheets, which may still be utilized to supplement the online course,” CTE Coordinator Chris Regner said. “This program is better suited to reach students by using media they are familiar with.”

AmeriCU representatives presented on “The 5 Don’ts for Student Finances,” which emphasized spending wisely and developing good budgeting and saving habits. They spoke with students in classes including Allied Health, New Visions Professions, Early Childhood Education and Auto Technology (juniors and seniors). Other classes that are participating include Cosmetology, Culinary Arts and Health Related Careers.

AmeriCU representatives hope to return in the spring to follow up on the program, said Regner.

Among school districts served by Madison-Oneida BOCES are Rome, Camden, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, Oneida, Canastota, Hamilton, Madison, Morrisville-Eaton, and Stockbridge
