Kudos to police, Law Enforcement Day

Kudos to the Rome Police Department and its leadership for its annual community outreach program, of which Law Enforcement Day is but a small — yet meaningful — part.

The event draws thousands of visitors who can observe, or in some cases take part in, a wide array of exhibits and demonstrations from highly specialized crime-fighting technology to specialized policing units, including the department’s K-9 unit, Special Response Team showcase, a Taser session, a Mercy Flight helicopter landing, a police drone demonstration, as well as entertainment and fireworks.

More importantly, people also had the opportunity to meet and talk with members of the department.

Such events provide extraordinary benefits.

Not only does the public gain significant understanding of the department’s tools and procedures, but they also gain an appreciation for the officers and the work they do day-in and day-out.

Likewise, officers need the public’s trust in order to perform their jobs effectively, and this event is a key way to open the door and begin an effective dialogue. By showing their dedication to the community and their commitment to doing their jobs professionally, the department helps build the requisite relationships.

When combined with the department’s community policing efforts — including it’s Community Impact Unit, Neighborhood Watch programs and school resource programs among others — it is a highly effective way to earn and maintain public trust and confidence.

Unlike many cities both large and small, our community and our police department are known for having an exceptional relationship. Kudos to both for working to maintain it.
