TOWN OF LOWVILLE — A 39-year-old man was charged with driving while ability impaired after his vehicle collided with an Amish horse and buggy Saturday, killing the horse and injuring the driver.
Matthew R. Therrien was also charged with felony DWI because he had two children in his vehicle, according to law enforcers.
Lewis County Sheriff’s deputies said Therrien, of 1 Legacy Drive, Baldwinsville in Onondaga County, was eastbound on Route 12 at 2:37 p.m. when he decided to try to pass a 17-year-old Amish boy riding in a horse-drawn buggy. Deputies said Therrien attempted to overtake the buggy, but instead struck the rear of the carriage, knocking it into a guard rail.
The horse was killed on impact.
The Amish teen, whose identity was not released, suffered multiple cuts and bruises, but he declined medical treatment, authorities said.
Therrien’s two 4-year-old sons were in the back seat and they were not harmed, deputies stated.
Therrien is charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, two counts of felony aggravated driving while intoxicated for the children in his vehicle, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, reckless driving, imprudent speed and failure to use due care when approaching a horse, authorities stated.
Therrien was arraigned in town Court and was sent to county jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond. He is scheduled to reappear in court.
