EMS Global is launching an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Placement Program called Operation Heartstart to a local business in the Mohawk Valley that shows a need.

Business owners and managers interested in an application can write to dronan@emsglobal.org or call 717-3189. The deadline for applications is Sept. 30.

An AED is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm. If needed, it can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest, a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. It usually causes death if it is not treated within minutes.

This program is made possible by an annual donation from Dr. Richard and Paula Chmielewski.
