Social Security to install video terminal at City Hall

Social Security Administration will partner with the City of Rome to provide video services to residents.

The Administration and the city will install video equipment that will allow Rome residents who are unable to travel to the Social Security Office in Utica to receive services via a high-tech video link from City Hall.

New York Regional Commissioner Beatrice M. Disman noted that budget cuts forced Social Security to close its field office in Rome last spring, "but by using video technology, we can continue serving locally the residents of Rome who prefer to do business in person and cannot travel to Utica."

Mayor Joseph R. Fusco Jr. said he is "very excited for our community to be awarded this wonderful opportunity that is given to so few municipalities."

Appointments will be available for video services at City Hall on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning Aug. 15. Beginning Monday, residents of Rome may call 1-877-405-6750 toll free to make an appointment for a live video interview with a Social Security representative. Those with appointments should plan to arrive at City Hall 15 minutes prior to their appointment.

Many services also are available using Social Security’s national, toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213 or 1-800-325-0778. Automated attendant services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Representatives are available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays. Information and services also are available online at www.socialsecurity.gov. Visitors can find up-to-date information, download publications, file an application or arrange for other services on the secure website.
