Gurdon Hurlbut, Jr., 86, of Wilson Road, Ava, died Friday, July 13, 2012 at Bethany Gardens. He was born January 28, 1926 in Westernville, NY the son of Gurdon and Carrie Suiter Hurlbut. Gurdon attended Holland Patent Schools. On July 9, 1947 he married Phoebe Jones in St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rome. Gurdon was a farmer and worked at the Rome Iron Mill and as a bus driver for Holland Patent school district. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and Cooperative Extension.
He is survived by his wife, Phoebe; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Joe Willson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Sherri Hurlbut and Gurdon and Lori Hurlbut; a brother, George Hurlbut; grandchildren, Stephen and Katherin; step-grandchildren, Diane, Chad, Kristi and Derek Jaquays; five great grandchildren; and Ronald Johnson and Marlin Schreiner who were like his sons. He was predeceased by a brother, Frank.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Prince-Boyd & Hyatt Home for Funerals, Inc., 210 W. Court St., Rome. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Home for Funerals Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
