Pacer comes close to record in Vernon Downs triumph

VERNON — Newcomer Yankees In Six fell just short of the track record for 4-year-old pacing geldings with his lifetime-best 1:51.1 win in Saturday night’s $8,000 featured sixth race at Vernon Downs.

Brian Connor was at the helm as Yankees In Six rallied from his sixth place starting spot to the front while holding off the late-charging Oozie’s Bad Boy by a neck at the finish and falling three-fifths of a second short of the Vernon standard set of 1:50.3 by River Shark in 2010.

It was only the pacer’s second start at the Vernon oval and 10th lifetime win.

Driver Rick Plano earned three victories for the second straight night and raised his win total to 45, tying him with Chris Lems on the season.

The Downs will host a racing card on Tuesday night starting at 6:55 to be followed by a fireworks display.

A special Fourth of July matinee racing program is scheduled Wednesday at 1:15 p.m.

There will be no racing on Thursday due to the "America" concert, with racing set to return on Friday night at 6:55.
