Having completed her fourth straight year and fifth overall as Board of Education president, Patricia Riedel hopes to add another year to that service when the board votes tonight on the annually elected post.
"I would like to be board president again....It’s strictly up to the board," said Riedel of the decision that will be among agenda items for the board’s annual reorganizational meeting.
The board meets at tonight at the school district office, 409 Bell Road. Its regular work session meeting will follow.
Riedel said some board members have asked her "whether I’d like it" regarding continuing as president, and "I said ‘yes.’" She was not aware of other board members expressing interest in seeking it, adding "no one has said anything to me."
The board has nine seats overall, and members are not paid. Monday’s meeting will include welcoming Karen Fontana as a newly elected member whose 3-year term began Sunday.
Riedel would like to remain president because "I think we’ve accomplished a lot" since she has been in the position, with "a lot more to accomplish," and she wants to stay closely involved. Among accomplishments, she said, the district has consolidated school buildings and offices for better efficiencies; passed budgets with local tax increases of 2 percent or less; and undertaken several school renovations with the help of two bonding referendums approved by a super-majority of the public. Those approval rates "mean we have the support of the community...which I’m very proud of," she added.
Still ahead, noted Riedel, are various new state requirements that must be addressed at the district level, including "common core" educational standards and teacher evaluation systems. She also would like to follow through on major upcoming renovations at Denti Elementary School and Strough Middle School. She has two years left on her basic 3-year term as a board member.
The position of president is considered the board’s leader and overall spokesperson, and works closely with the district superintendent on topics to be addressed by the board.
Other items on the reorganizational agenda Monday include annual approvals for district services and procedures, involving internal as well as external positions. Among the many categories are electing a board vice president and clerk; appointing a district architect of record and legal counsel of record; designating banks as official depositories; and updating tuition rates for out-of-district students.
