BARNEVELD — Bruce Elwell, DO, a family practice physician at Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare’s Adirondack Community Physicians Barneveld Medical Office and medical director of St. Luke’s Home, has been honored with the "2012 Family Doctor of the Year" award by the New York State Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Elwell received the award June 16, during the Academy’s annual Congress of Delegates in Albany.
Dr. Elwell has practiced family medicine since 1988. In his position as medical director for St. Luke’s Home in Utica, he oversees all programs including subacute rehabilitation, long-term care and the medical-model adult day health care program.
Dr. Elwell was nominated for the award by several of his patients. They cited in their letters of nomination his compassion and understanding and his diligence in pursuing a complete diagnosis.
"I feel that Dr. Elwell goes beyond what is expected of a family practice doctor," a 91-year-old patient wrote. She explained that he routinely makes himself available to her to answer any questions or concerns.
Dr. Elwell is a graduate of the Colorado State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in microbiology and chemistry. He received his DO from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a family medicine residency at the Air Force Medical Center at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.
