Birnie charter overturns in Virginia with no injuries

A charter bus from Rome-based Birnie Bus company that was carrying Thousand Islands Central School students on a class trip lost control and overturned in a grassy highway median in Virginia Thursday morning. No one was injured, said Virginia State Police.

The driver, Larry Pushlar, was charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain control, said state police spokeswoman Michelle Anaya, according to an Associated Press report. Pushlar, of Sherburne, is currently off-duty pending an investigation of the accident, said Birnie Bus Vice President of Operations Eric Taylor.

The tour bus was carrying 35 students and four chaperones to Virginia Beach when the accident occurred on Route 13 near New Church in Accommack County in Virginia, said the AP. When the bus went off the shoulder and into the median, it basically "sunk down" in the lower grassy area and fell over onto one side of the vehicle, Taylor explained. The bus hit a culvert after drifting into the median, the AP said.

Birnie arranged for another coach bus from an area company so the students could continue their trip, said Taylor, and will pick up students to bring them home at the end of the trip; they are scheduled to be in Virginia Beach until Sunday, he added.

"We are very thankful that there were no injuries. We want to thank the students and staff for working so well with the driver after the incident," Taylor said.
