TOWN OF SULLIVAN — A Madison County man is facing multiple charges for using his wife and infant daughter as shields during a standoff with law enforcers early Wednesday morning.
Two officers suffered minor injures while taking 23-year-old Jonathan Onn into custody, authorities said.
State police said Onn was in a domestic dispute with his wife at their Sandy Hatch Road residence at about 3:48 a.m., and multiple officers responded. When Trooper Miles Robertson knocked on the front door, he heard a gun being chambered from inside, and then authorities said Onn opened the door with a long gun in his arms.
Troopers said Onn slammed the door shut and started covering his windows. The officers started evacuating neighbors and set up a perimeter around Onn’s residence.
A short time later, authorities said Onn came out of his residence and was standing behind his wife, who was holding their infant daughter.
Trooper Mark Buzzard spoke with Onn and convinced him to walk away from the residence. Two troopers followed while a third stepped into the doorway to keep Onn from going back inside.
At some point, troopers said Onn had taken his infant daughter while he walked away from the residence and sat on the ground. The troopers were able to get the girl away from Onn, handing the child to another relative.
Then Onn rolled onto his stomach and started kicking wildly, authorities said. Trooper Buzzard was struck in the face, and Trooper Brian Derochie was hit in the chest and left knee. Trooper Buzzard blasted Onn in the face with pepper spray, authorities said, but he continued to struggle until he was finally hand-cuffed.
The troopers’ injuries were not life-threatening.
Onn is charged with second-degree assault, menacing a police officer, both felonies, resisting arrest and endangering the welfare of a child, troopers said. He was arraigned in Town Court and was sent to county jail on $100,000 cash bail or $500,000 bond. He is scheduled to reappear in court on June 5.
