
VERNON — Two volunteers with Western Fire Department received awards at the annual Midstate Regional Emergency Medical Services Council banquet held at Vernon Downs Friday.
Second Assistant Chief Peter Giesse received the Leadership Award for his work on the scenes of emergency calls. Giesse is also head of the medical department for the volunteer fire company and is a critical care provider for AmCare Ambulance.
Third Assistant Chief Thomas Howard received the Educator of the Year award. Howard has led joint safety training programs for Western Fire Department that have helped train other local companies including Holland Patent, Floyd and Stittville fire departments. He has also taught courses in first aid and CPR and has conducted training with staff at Lake Delta State Park, as well as local schools and day care centers.
The Midstate Regional Emergency Medical Services Council is comprised of Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties.
