55th girls invitational meet set for Saturday at Stadium

Rome Free Academy will host its 55th annual girls track and field invitational on Saturday at the Stadium beginning at 2 p.m.

Now known as the Copper City Classic, the invitational began in 1954 and has been held every year except three times. It is believed to be the oldest girls track and field invitational in the state.

The meet will have 21 teams attending, with 17 from Section III. Along with the host Lady Black Knights, those included from Section III are Camden, Holland Patent, South Lewis, Whitesboro, New Hartford, Proctor High of Utica, South Jefferson, Tully, Cazenovia, East Syracuse-Minoa, Watertown Immaculate Heart Central and Syracuse City Schools.

Squads from other sections in the state include Seton Catholic of Section VII, Bethlehem of Section II, and Section X’s Potsdam and Canton.

The event is scheduled run until 6:30 p.m.

Rome has a 4-0 record in dual meets, while South Lewis is also undefeated at 5-0.
