The Westmoreland-Oriskany boys varsity soccer team began the 2018 season splitting their first two games.

This season represents the third consecutive year of the soccer program merger between the two neighboring schools.

The Bulldogs open their season in a kickoff tournament in Sherburne-Earlville on Aug. 30 with a 4-0 loss to Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.

Brady Morris made four saves for the Bulldogs.

In the consolation game on Sept. 1, Westmoreland-Oriskany defeated Unadilla Valley 2-1.

Forward Trevor Tamburino scored the game-winner with just over 14 minutes remaining. Camilo Cadena scored the other goal for the Bulldogs and Isaac Eldridge added an assist.

Morris stopped six shots in net for Westmoreland-Oriskany.

Junior defender Kyle Meagher and freshman midfielder Caleb Miller were named to the all-tournament team.

Westmoreland-Oriskany head coach Gil Palladino is entering his third year as the Bulldog head coach after spending 29 years at Clinton High School. With the victory against Unadilla Valey, won his 350th game in his 25-year career with Clinton and Westmoreland-Oriskany. Palladino has an overall record of 350-97-27.

“I love tournaments at the beginning of the season and at the very end,” Palladino said. Last year we ended our regular season with one and it helped prepare us for the feeling of post season play. This year with so many young players a kickoff tournament gives me an early measurement of what we have and what we have to do to be successful in the season ahead.”

The Bulldogs return eleven players from last year’s 8-6-2 team, a squad that lost to Tully 1-0 in sectional play to end their season. Lost to graduation was standout Devon Slaboc, a Mohawk Valley All-Star who is playing soccer this fall for Division II Assumption College in Massachusetts. Colton Davis, a junior midfielder and third year varsity player is the team’s captain.

Davis will look to lead a team that will feature some goal scoring talent in Tamburino, a sophomore; junior Isaac Eldridge and Columbian foreign exchange student Camilo Cadena.
