Varin goes from eighth to first at U-R Speedway
VERNON — Bobby Varin took the win at Utica-Rome Speedway on July 22 in the 358 modified feature after starting the race in eighth place.
Varin moved up to second place and began his fight for the lead with Lance Willix on laps five and six, finally gaining the lead on lap seven.
Varin held on for the win, with Billy Dunn, Bobby Herrington, Pat Ward, Mike Mahaney, Willix, Billy Whittaker, Glenn Forward, Jack Lehner and Marc Johnson rounding out the top 10.
Dave Marcuccilli won the Mike Martin Memorial for the sportsman class, and Rich Crane won in dominating fashion in the pro stock feature.
The rookie sportsman main event was rained out.
In the Mike Martin Memorial, Kevin Root controlled the first 20 laps with a fight for second place occurring behind him between Charlie Tibbits, Matt Janczuk and eventual winner Marcuccilli.
Marcuccilli grabbed the second-place spot on lap eight and once there he made his move for the lead position, which he got on lap 13. He led the rest of the way, with Root, Janczuk, Tibbits and AJ Filbeck rounding out the top five.
In the pro stock 40-lap feature, Crane went from his starting eighth place spot to the lead position by the end of the first lap. Pete Stefanski, Chuck Dumblewski Jon Routhier and Shane Henderson rounded out the top five.
Racing returns to Utica-Rome Speedway on Sunday, Aug. 5 with gates opening at 4 p.m. and racing starting at 7.
